General questions:
Q: Which is better: Cable
or DSL?
A: Both technologies offer excellent connections to
the Internet but there are a few differences. Cable connections
are theoretically faster and generally are faster however the
cable system is designed in such a way that if many people are
using the same cable segment then the connection speeds can drop
significantly. And of course cable television service must be
available at your location. DSL requires telephone access at
your location and connection speed is generally dictated by your
distance from the telephone company equipment. Because the connection
is direct between the user and the telephone company security
is slightly higher with DSL. Currently there are several other
high speed Internet access technologies available such as satellite
and wireless. These will likely become viable options in the
not too distant future and may already be the only available
option for rural customers.

Q: What should I look for
in a new computer?
A: Some general guidelines are presented in an article entitled 'New computer recommendations'
in the client support area.
This article pertains to IBM clone type computers with either
AMD or Intel processors. Computers of this nature generally either
run Windows or Linux/Unix
operating systems.

Q: What is Linux?
A: Linux is a freely distributed operating system that
behaves like the Unix operating system. Linux was designed specifically
for the PC platform and takes advantage of its design to give
users comparable performance to high-end UNIX workstations. Many
big-name companies have joined the Linux bandwagon such as IBM
and Compaq, offering systems pre-installed with Linux. Also,
many companies have started Linux packages, such as Red Hat,
Corel, and Samba. However, they can only charge for services
and documentation packaged with the Linux software. More and
more businesses are using Linux as an efficient and more economical
way to run their networks. For more information visit the Linux area of the Network
Chico web site where you can learn Linux
tips and tricks, Linux history
and view the Linux FAQ.
