Network Chico Mac OS
X Security

Apple
Macintosh computers are less vulnerable
to security issues in some instances
but they are not immune.
Since there are far fewer computers running Mac
OS than Windows the bulk of
viruses written tend to exploit computers running Windows.
But there are in fact viruses, trojans and worms that can affect
Macs as well. Following the general security
guidelines is a must. Keep your operating system files current.
Have a firewall and anti-virus
solution in place. Stay informed about new security
threats on the Internet as there will generally always be an
indication as to whether or not they are a danger to Mac
OS users.
Be sure to check out the Network
Chico Mac
OS resources for links to more information about Apple computers
and the Mac OS.
General guidelines:
- Use a firewall, either hardware,
software or both for any network connection
- Use anti-virus software and
keep it up-to-date
- Keep operating system files and application files patched
and up-to-date
- Create an additional non-administrative account for daily
use
- Use the OS X screensaver with a password
- Turn on network time synchronization
Mac OS X users should ensure
that the OS X built in firewall
is turned on by clicking on: System preferences >>
Sharing >> Firewall and then Start
if the firewall is not already running. For more tips and tricks
visit the Mac OS information pages
at Network Chico.
