27 September 2005 The Google search engine celebrates its seventh
birthday today.
26 September 2005 The netchico.com
search engine database has been updated to reflect recent
changes to the site.

startup application information page has been updated. Currently
the searchable page contains 10,799
items. This page presents a searchable, comprehensive list of
the programs you may find that run when you switch on your Windows PC as typically identified
by MSCONFIG or the registry "Run" keys - and whether
you need them.
11 September 2005 A new tip has been added to the
Windows tips and tricks page
dealing with defragmenting a computer that uses the Windows XP
hibernation feature.
10 September 2005 For faster boot times of your Windows
XP system you can follow the tip on cleaning out your Windows
XP Prefetch folder that appears on the Windows
information page.
06 September 2005 The bulk of the navigational upgrade
has been complete. Due to visitor feedback the left side menu
bar has been made gray for easier viewing.

12 July 2005 A new file has been added to the downloads page. The guide to securing Windows XP Pro in a network
environment is in PDF
format and provides information on how to secure a Windows XP
Pro client machine for use in a Windows 2000 Server environment.10
July 2005 The Mac OS X (10.3.x "Panther") Security
Configuration Guide has been updated to the final version.
The purpose of this guide is to provide an overview of Mac OS
X v10.3.x “Panther” operating system security and recommendations
for configuring the security features. This guide provides recommended
settings to secure systems using this operating system and points
out problems that could cause security concerns in systems using
this operating system.

15 June 2005 Numerous upgrades to the navigational
system of the web site have been made.

Search and Destroy (1.4) was released. Network
Chico recommends that all Windows
users upgrade to the new version.

05 March 2005 New software has been added to the Windows freeware section
of the web site. BHOCaptor
is a freeware application that lets you control the Internet
Explorer Browser Helper Objects that are installed on your system.
It makes it easy to see what BHOs are installed and to de-activate
or remove them.
04 March 2005 An upgrade to the netchico.com
navigational system has been completed. Links to the Linux,
Mac OS and Windows
information areas of the web site have been added to the main
menu bar near the top of each page. These areas feature news,
information and tips and tricks pertinent to each operating system.

28 February 2005 Mozilla has released an updated version of
their Firefox browser. Version 1.0.1 features improved
stability, International Domain Names are now displayed as punycode
and several security fixes. Network
Chico recommends using the Firefox browser as an alternative to Internet
Explorer in some situations.
25 February 2005 In just slightly under one year the
Network Chico web site www.netchico.com has surpassed
the 500,000 hit mark. Network Chico

22 February 2005 A new tip has been added to the Linux tips page. This latest tip
discusses the use of the ngrep
(network grep) command to monitor network traffic.
21 February 2005 Microsoft will keep it's anti-spyware
software free. During Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates' keynote
speech at the RSA Conference 2005 he announced that the software
giant plans to provide customers with its new Windows AntiSpyware software for free. The
initiative is part of the company's efforts to strengthen security
for home and business users of its Windows desktop software.

discusses a tool for auditing
passwords for security purposes.

Chico home page had some adjustments made to it for better
display on smaller monitors and hopefully better usability. Visitor
feedback is welcome on

03 January 2005 The SoftPerfect Network
Scanner has been added to the Windows
freeware section of the web site. Network
Scanner is a free multi-threaded IP, NetBIOS and SNMP scanner
with a modern interface and several advanced features. It is
intended for both system administrators and users who are interested
in computer security. The program pings computers, scans for
listening TCP ports and shows what types of resources are shared
on a network (including system and hidden).
