Virtual dedicated servers offer many of the capabilities and features of dedicated servers, including admin (root) access and dedicated IP addresses, but at a much lower price. However, as a virtual dedicated server is, indeed, virtually dedicated, the customer in fact shares the server space with a small number of other customers. But because each virtual dedicated server is effectively isolated from other accounts on the server, the user has full control over the server space. As well, virtual dedicated server plans feature very high performance and available disk space and bandwidth.
Virtual private servers, which enable hosting providers to offer virtual dedicated servers, are based on the concept of partitions on mainframes that allow each division to function as a virtual standalone server dedicated to a single customer. To ensure high and reliable performance for all accounts, our server boxes are partitioned in such a way that each virtual dedicated server operates almost entirely independently of the other accounts that share the server space. This means that with a virtual dedicated server, you will enjoy consistent, high performance, even when usage peaks on the main server.
Virtual dedicated servers are particularly useful for companies and individuals that run higher-traffic Web sites or complex applications and thus need the bandwidth, consistent performance, and flexibility of a virtual dedicated server.

Unlike normal hosting plans, which put many customers’ accounts on a single server, a dedicated server is reserved exclusively for the account and usage of a single customer. This means that the dedicated server customer has exclusive rights to the server’s bandwidth, memory and storage space; performance will not be affected by traffic and usage patterns of other customers.
When you purchase a dedicated server, you actually lease a server box, which will be configured and set up according to your preferences, but remains at our data center. A dedicated server account provides a dedicated IP address and full control of server usage and software installation, as you have admin (root) access to the server.
Dedicated servers are particularly useful for companies and individuals that run very-high-traffic Web sites or applications and thus need the bandwidth, versatility, and consistent performance of a dedicated box. This means that you can use the server for a wide variety of purposes, including gaming, database management, and traffic-intensive Web sites.

Maintenance is an important part of server management. By making sure that your servers software is up-to-date and free of security issues, you can prevent potential issues with your server.
Backups
It is critical that all important data on your server be backed up in case the worst scenario should occur. You should create a backup prior to any significant change within your applications. In addition, backup maintenance should be done on a regular basis, depending upon how often your content changes. We recommend that you save your backups somewhere other than on the server itself. Reprovisioning a server will wipe out any backups stored on that server. For added security and ease of use, we offer FTP Backup storage space for a fee.
Updates
Server updates and vulnerabilities can be found at any time, causing web-based software to become critically vulnerable. We recommend keeping all services and software up to date with the latest stable version available. Review the documentation provided by your software vendors to ensure that all updates are compatible with your system. Operating systems updates for Virtual Dedicated servers are done at the parent level by our server administrators.
Passwords
Good security includes use of very strong passwords; combinations of upper case and lower case letters along with numbers and special characters. Passwords should be at least 8 characters long and not spell a word found in the dictionary. Passwords should also be changed on a regular basis. Most security experts recommend changing your password every 60 – 90 days.
Anti-Virus
While servers that are not used for Web browsing or personal email use are less vulnerable to viruses, you should still protect your server from these threats. All content should be scanned as it enters the server with an Anti-Virus program. Virtual Dedicated Servers require that Anti-Virus programs function without Kernel access.
